Ratargul Swamp Forest: A Unique Ecosystem in Bangladesh
Ratargul Swamp Forest, located in northeastern Bangladesh, is the country's only freshwater swamp forest. Submerged for much of the year, it features stunning views of submerged trees and clear waters, thanks to the Goain River, which nourishes its ecosystem.
The forest covers approximately 3.25 square kilometres and reaches depths of 10 to 15 meters. Its rich biodiversity includes over 70 plant species, such as kor och and kadam, and more than 200 animal species, including monkeys, otters, and numerous birds. Ratargul is home to endangered species like the masked finfoot and Pallasââ¬â¢s fish eagle.
Birdwatching is a highlight, with 73 bird species, including the Red Junglefowl and Lesser Whistling Duck, making it an essential breeding ground for migratory birds. Visitors can explore the forest by boat, enjoying its serene beauty and wildlife.
Despite its ecological significance, Ratargul remains relatively undiscovered. Efforts are underway to promote ecotourism and conservation awareness.
